Smokey and the Bandit turn 30, Beer run ensues in honor

Smokey and the BanditA friend of mine and automotive appraiser, Dave Kinney, is recreating the Texarkana -> Atlanta run in a vintage 1979 Trans Am. His trek starts later today, and he’ll be journaling his travels over at the Cars That Matter site. Should be a great time, and great stories to come. Keep an eye for the updates as the story progresses.

  • ImportTuner.com Ride of the Month Contest

I was recently asked to review the Import Tuner Ride of the Month Contest for May 2007.

Entering is a pretty straightforward process, and seems like a great way for readers to show off their ride, as well as brag to their friends when it gets chosen and featured on the importtuner.com website.

You must submit your photo by May 22, 2007 to be eligible for voting which starts the same day and goes through the end of the month. They’ll choose three entries and feature them in an online article as well as send each winner an importtuner.com t-shirt.

All you have to do is enter your contact information (don’t forget your T-shirt size), information about your vehicle, and finally, upload some photos (up to four). When uploading a photo, it spawns a small pop-up with a file upload window. I had a little trouble getting that window to fully resolve, but after 4 tries, it did (for some reason, the second photo window always opened first click).

  • Review: Local Gas Prices Web Widget

There has never been a more important time to find the cheapest gas around. And so when I was recently asked to review this handy web widget from automotive.com, I was all in on testing it out and hoping for the best. It’s a pretty basic little widget in that you just copy and paste a little bit of code into your site, and it automatically displays the recent average price for gas. In fact, here’s one now:

  • Nengun Performance

NengunNengun Performance is a Japanese-based wholesale distributor of performance automotive parts who have been selling online since 2000. And when you get to the site, you immediately know if you are in the right place or not. This site is for that specific niche of driver who knows every single thing about his car, how it affects performance, and what he’d like to replace it with. As you scroll through the pages and pages of products, you are tempted with all the goodies and temptations, from drivetrain improvements such as the Cusco Twin Metal Cluctch, to the Amuse R1000 exhaust. Many of the products that Nengun offers are only available on the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM), including products from manufacturers such as HKS, Apexi, Greddy, Mugen, Spoon, TRD and Nismo. Nengun Performance is not for the faint of heart, or pocketbook. Anything can be upgraded here, from carbon oil pans to a Spoon carbon racing mirror, and after a while, I started thinking about my years and years playing the Gran Turismo series, however, when you want something new, you can’t just run a few laps at an easy course to pay off that turbo kit, you have to actually earn it and pay with real money. But it’s just as easy to spend.

  • Better off Dead Camaro Lives

Someone recently found the actual Camaro from Better off Dead, the classic 80’s John Cusack film.

    Better off Dead Camaro

And along with a some great pictures and captures from the film, he’s documented every step of the recon mission, including details from the body-off restoration.

This is actaully really cool, and I give this guy a ton of credit for preserving not only a nice car, but a classic piece of 80s culture. Read all about it here.

Now, if I could just get my $2…
