Review: Local Gas Prices Web Widget

There has never been a more important time to find the cheapest gas around. And so when I was recently asked to review this handy web widget from automotive.com, I was all in on testing it out and hoping for the best. It’s a pretty basic little widget in that you just copy and paste a little bit of code into your site, and it automatically displays the recent average price for gas. In fact, here’s one now:

You just toss in your zip code and it’ll display away. Mine is pre-set for Portland, Oregon, which seems to be about $0.30 higher than the average (at the time of this writing). But the real value is to let it get personal. Once you enter your own zip code though, it takes you to another site where it displays a whole page of local gas stations and their prices. It even highlights where the cheapest gas is for Regular, Plus, and Premium. It’s a pretty handy feature, and now that gas is getting so costly, I might start paying attention more. I have to admit in the past, I never really worried about prices too much, as I’d rather just get it when I need it, even if it meant paying an extra dollar or two for convenience, but now when a 15 gallon tank is pushing $50 a fill, I’m suddenly more interested in saving $.10 a gallon. Here’s screenshot of the detail page:

It’s a pretty cool little widget, and it couldn’t be easier to install. It’s elegant, and handy for my readers, and it’s value is pretty obvious, especially as Summer driving season is upon us. Thanks automotive.com.
